Quick answer: Wine barrels and whisky casks are both oak, but they are different barrels. Wine barrels are usually 225-litre French or American oak barriques, toasted inside and stained red by the wine. Whisky casks are usually ex-bourbon American oak or ex-sherry European oak, charred or heavily toasted, thicker-staved and much easier to source in the UK. Furniture made from either looks broadly similar. Everything we build at Barrels Furniture is made from reclaimed whisky barrel oak, in our Southampton workshop, not from wine barrels.
If you have searched for a wine barrel table, a wine barrel coffee table or wine barrel furniture in general, you have probably noticed that most of what comes back in the UK is actually made from whisky casks. That is not a bait and switch. It is a supply story, and once you understand it the choice gets a lot simpler.

Why almost all UK barrel furniture is whisky barrel furniture
Scotch whisky maturation runs on a huge, constantly turning stock of casks. When a cask has given its best to the spirit it is retired, and those retired casks are available in the UK in real numbers, at consistent sizes, in consistent condition. That is what makes a workshop able to promise you the same piece twice.
Wine barrels do not work like that in Britain. The UK’s wine industry is small and growing, but it does not retire barrels at anything like the volume needed to supply a furniture trade. Anything sold here as a genuine wine barrel has usually been imported, which pushes the price up and the consistency down.
So when you see a British-made barrel table, the odds are overwhelming that it started life holding whisky. We would rather tell you that plainly than let you find out after it arrives.
Does it change the furniture?
Less than you would think, and in a few places more than you would think.
- The look is close. Both are hooped oak barrels with the same silhouette. Once a barrel is cleaned, sanded and finished, a guest is not going to tell you which one it was.
- Whisky oak is usually heavier. Thicker staves mean a table or cabinet that feels solid rather than decorative. It also means it will take being leaned on, which matters for a bar.
- The inside tells the truth. Open a cabinet built from a whisky cask and the interior is dark and charred. A wine barrel interior would be red-stained. If a piece has an open or glazed interior, this is the one visible difference.
- The smell fades either way. A freshly opened cask smells of what it held. After cleaning, drying and finishing, that is mostly gone.

Frequently asked questions
Is wine barrel furniture better than whisky barrel furniture?
No. Neither is better as a material. Whisky casks tend to have thicker staves and a heavier build, which suits furniture that gets used hard. Wine barrels are lighter and stained red inside. The bigger factor in how good the finished piece is will always be the workshop, not which drink was in the barrel.
Can you make furniture from a wine barrel?
You can, and workshops in wine-producing regions do it routinely. In the UK it is uncommon because retired wine barrels are scarce and usually imported. We do not build from wine barrels.
How can I tell whether a barrel table is really made from a barrel?
Look for the hoops, the stave lines and the bung hole. A genuine cask has slightly irregular staves and a visible bung. Reproduction barrel-style tables tend to have perfectly even staves, no bung, and a much lighter weight.
What size is a whisky barrel table?
An ex-bourbon barrel is roughly 200 litres and gives a table around 60 to 72cm across depending on where it is cut. Sherry butts are much larger. Every product page on our site lists its own measurements, because casks vary.

Delivery to the UK mainland is included in the price shown on the site; the Highlands, Islands and Northern Ireland carry a surcharge, which we confirm with you before the order goes ahead. Every piece is built to order, so most items are dispatched within 7 to 10 working days, and larger sets can take up to two or three weeks.
